Reaching Out with FIRST
Team Duct Tape was honored to be selected to represent FIRST Tech Challenge at this week’s Elliott Masie
Learning 2011 Conference in Orlando. TDT students joined Exploding Bacon’s FRC team and FLL Team Party Boss in a fantastic day that included an opportunity to meet with FIRST founder Dean Kamen, in the morning, along with FIRST Vice Chairman John Abele (who received the Masie Learning Center’s Lifetime Learner Award) and FIRST president Jon Dudas.
Later, all the FIRST students went on stage with Dean and Elliott Masie to talk a bit about FIRST and to see FIRST awarded a $25,000 Learning Gives Back Grant from Masie Learning. And then the rest of the day was spent sharing FIRST with conference attendees, and enjoying some of the fantastic sessions. We stayed long enough to enjoy a storytelling session with actor John Lithgow, too, which was the icing on the cake of a really amazing day!
Tonight some of our students head out to the ASME-Florida West Coast Section November meeting,in Dunedin, to join up with FRC Team Thundercats to talk about this season’s challenge and FIRST in general. We’re really looking forward to it!
That and eventually getting our robot done!
Flying all over!
TDT and FRC team Exploding Bacon, hung out at the Central Florida Aerospace Academy this afternoon – an ubercool school located on the SUN ’n FUN and Florida Air Museum campus at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport– which is building an FTC and an FRC team this season, and tonight we head out to the Land O’ Lakes Library to share FTC with students at the library’s Teen Night program.
Last run for the robot – which comes apart tomorrow! We have quite literally run our wonderful machine to nth degree!

Big Kid Playpen!
Team Duct Tape had a great time at LIFE Fest 2010, playing with robots with Exploding Bacon members and FLL

Coach Eric Grajales, of Exploding Bacon, helps Visitors
BRICKschoolers members. Our FIRST area was bustling the whole day! It was fun to give Cubie one more run (we’ve given it about three more runs since we thought we’d be dismantling it three weeks ago!) – using Samantha for added fun!
Tonight, one of our students is heading over to the Florida West Coast Chapter IEEE-RAS meeting, at Middleton High School, where he’ll be sharing his experiences about his summer internship at Anybots.

Getting into the spirit of FTC!
