We’ve been so busy since kick-off in early September, we haven’t had a chance to post an update until now.
First of all, congratulations to Marcus of KNO3 for taking home the duct tape Minion in recognition of his great Rover Ruckus game guess, in our annual Guess the Game challenge! And second, Rover Ruckus is pretty awesome. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by descending from a central platform called “the Lander”, collecting Minerals (blocks and balls) from the Crater, sorting and scoring Minerals into the Cargo Hold of the Lander, performing Autonomous tasks, and navigating to specific parts of the Playing Field. You can see the Rover Ruckus game animation and other related game specs on our Library page.
The Hive is the new 10,000 sq. ft. makerspace at the John F. Germany Library in downtown Tampa, designed by our sponsors, the Eureka Factory, and brought to life by the awesome librarians at the Tampa Hillsborough Public Library System. One of the coolest things about the Hive is the Robotics Center, with a permanent FIRST Tech Challenge field donated by AndyMark, two FIRST LEGO League tables that we built and donated, and outfitted with improvements and custom furniture by one of our team members, Bryce, as his Eagle Scout project.
We’ve helped provide training for library staff, on the FIRST experience, and have helped with FIRST demos and outreach during Hive Open Houses, leading up to the Grand Opening later this year. And now the Hive is even starting its own FIRST LEGO League team!
There have also been two FIRST Training Days held at the Hive this month, with more planned. It’s a great space with lots of resources and opportunities for making and doing.
TDT videographer, Ryder, put together this video during the first Hive Open House back in July. The next open house is August 23, starting at noon.
